Hair loss
It’s normal to lose between 50 and 100 hairs a day. If you see more shedding than that, or excessive thinning or bald patches, there may be a medical reason for you hair loss. Reasons for hair loss include
- Hereditary thinning or baldness, the most common cause of hairloss that affects both men and women
- Alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder, in which smooth round patches of hair loss are seen
- Telogen effluvium, a temporary increase in shedding which can be due to a stressful event on the body such as childbirth, a major surgery, or severe infection
- Fungal infections, such as ringworm of the scalp
- Certain prescription medications
- Excessive styling products such as relaxers or dyes that can cause hair breakage
- Dieting and poor nutrition, and more
